Explore the 1792 Gem Collection

Currently, the working pages on this site can be found on the “EXPLORE” AND “Catalogues” pages.

  • EXPLORE – Search by text and image match the “Catalgoue of Impressions of One Hundred Gems” by Marchant, 1792
    • Master Index – A comparative spreadsheet comparing the entries about Marchant’s 100 gems as found in his 1792 Catalogue, in the Raspe-Tassie Catalogue of 1791, and The Gertrude Seidmann article in the Walpole Journal, 1987.
  • Catalogues – PDF copies of two Catalogues

Welcome to the EXPLORE page.  This is where Marchant's Catalogue of Impressions of one hundred of his gems can be searched and, yes, explored.  The images below on the right include all 100 entries in the Catalogue.  Each can be clicked on for full information about the entry.  They are presented in groups of 20 with pagination at the bottom to travel between groups.

If you have an image that may be one of Marchant's gems or one that is similar and want to check for a match with the impressions in the catalogue use the SEARCH BY IMAGE below in order to upload the image and check for a match or anything that is close.

The "Search Catalogue by title or description" search delves into the descriptions in the catalogue, which usually describe the ancient sculpture, etc. from which Marchant derived the image he used.  For instance, if you would like to find all of the impressions which were derived from items in the Vatican collection, enter "Vatican" in the search bar and those impressions will be selected in the resulting group at the right.

HAVE FUN.
